We estimate that 6800 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) will be generated from air travel to the Congress. To help balance the GHG impact of the Congress, IUCN staff will be purchasing carbon offset credits for air travel and shipping to the Congress.
Community-run forest nurseries rehabilitate the Kibale National Park in Uganda.
Supporting forests through offsetting
We’ve selected two fantastic projects which have verified GHG emissions reductions, and hope to encourage all our delegates to offset their air travel emissions too – a forest rehabilitation project in Uganda and a conservation project protecting critically threatened forests in Indonesia from further destruction. For every tonne of GHGs that's created by your air travel these projects ensure that an equivalent tonnage of GHGs is not emitted. (e.g. 3t per flight from Europe or 2t from USA).
Delegates can opt-in to offset during the registration process. We’re happy to report that so far approximately 80% of registered delegates have chosen to offset their air travel, mitigating their GHGs and helping restore and protect forests.
Read more about the offsetting projects, what else you can do to take green footsteps to the Congress and what we’re doing to create a green event.
