1. Reaching Conservation Goals – A Vision of Hope

Caribbean - Young hawksbill turtle in the Cayman islands @William Goodwin

This stream demonstrated that a well-planned and managed protected area system is essential to conservation. It was profiled those people, places and organisations leading the way to conservation success, and provide examples of leadership, creative thinking and optimism, showing that conservation goals are achievable. The output has been a template of how Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, of conserving at least 17% of terrestrial and inland water and 10% of coastal and marine areas could be achieved. New standards for an effective and equitable protected area system have been proposed, concluding with a look at the future: if the Aichi Targets are for 2020, what should the ultimate conservation targets look like?
